Nottinghamshire City Breaks
Bring to mind Nottingham and mostly all visitors think of Sherwood Forest and the legend of Sir Robin Hood and his merry men and although the story attracts increasing numbers of people year after year there is much more to the region than meets the eye. Indeed Nottingham has a large number of fascinating visitor attractions and it makes it an excellent place for a short break and the article below introduces the city and a small number of Nottingham attractions, including some places offering bed and breakfast accommodation in Nottingham.
Nottingham is in Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands, England, Great Britain. As well as the legend of Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest, the city is also known for the lace making business especially at the time of the Industrial Revolution when it gained a worldwide reputation for excellence.
The Lace Market
At one time the heart of the world’s lace industry, at the peak of the British Empire, the Lace Market in Nottingham is, today, a protected heritage area. The area is home to numerous superb examples of industrial architecture of the Nineteenth Century. The Lace Market wasn’t like a normal market, as such, instead of featuring stalls and stall holders, the lace market was more a collection of warehouses and salesrooms displaying and selling lace. Following the collapse in the lace industry the area became derelict however, today, most of the old warehouses have been renovated for other purposes for example photographic studios and the likes. The Lace Market in Nottingham is a popular tourist attraction.
Shire Hall & Galleries of Justice
Nearby the Lace Market can be found the Galleries of Justice located in Shire Hall. The Hall is a Georgian-built building which features Neoclassical pilasters, columns and dome. The facade has, if you examine it carefully, a spelling mistake Goal instead of Gaol. Shire Hall has 2 superbly preserved courtrooms from the Victorian period and old cells, bath house, a women’s prison, a prisoner’s exercise yard and an Edwardian police station.
The City of Nottingham is a great place to have a short vacation. There is lots to see and do within the city and a huge selection of visitor attractions nearby. Places worth visiting include; Newstead Abbey, Wollaton Hall and Hardwick Hall.
As is common in all bed & breakfast accommodation in England, Nottingham accommodation is commonly top class at a reasonable rate and many visitors choose to stay in Nottingham for only part of their break and then elsewhere for the remaining time.
