Frequently we overlook the many local attractions and yet they are commonly superb and more superior than those we would see elsewhere. Folk resident in the United Kingdom have a fantastic list of vacation destinations each having a massive selection of first class visitor attractions to visit. In this article I discuss the English city of York and York hotels.
York is located in Yorkshire, north England and was, hundreds of years ago, the capital city of northern England. With such an old city it will not come as a great surprise to find a huge selection of incredibly historic buildings, however you may not expect the astounding sight of the Gothic masterpiece of York Minster.
The first York Minster was a humble construction made of wood in which King Edwin of Northumbria was, in 627, baptised. It wasn’t until the time of the Normans that the first substantial building made from stone appeared on the site. Constructed by Thomas of Bayeux, a Norman Archbishop it was enhanced by Archbishop Roger who constructed a north and south transept. After many more additions the cathedral was said to be complete and consecrated in 1472. Inside has the largest medieval stained glass window in the world. York has other places to visit including; Barley Hall, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum, The Shambles, York Castle Museum and York Dungeon.
On top of all of the amazing historic and ancient visitor attractions introduced above, the city of York is a superb place to spend an evening partying or experience live music, the opera or theatre. It that doesn’t excite you then alternatively you could spend the evening in a pub there are certainly plenty to choose from, to name but a few; Slug and Lettuce, The Bay Horse Marygate, Old Star Inn, The Royal Oak and The Bluebell Inn, and, lastly, the Black Swan. Of all of them the Black Swan is probably the best with an incredible atmosphere and sometimes having live music.
