Apply For A Passport: Finding A US Passport Office Near You

Anyone that is looking to take an international trip better get ready to get in line at their local American passport office if they don’t already have a passport. Finding an office is not difficult, especially with the help of the Internet. A surprise for many is that their local post office also serves as a passport processing center.

The one thing that everyone can rest assured of is that there are no shortcuts when it comes to passport applications, especially for first time passport applicants. The forms all have to be filled out and all the right documentation must be included. This one document is how the government tracks who is coming and who is going and they make sure that everything is in line before that little blue book gets issued.

This national security concern is one of the reasons that the government asks citizens to apply for a passport in person. In order to make applying in person easier, the government has designated many different government service offices as passport offices. This way, citizens do not have to travel to regional passport offices in major cities.

People are actually surprised at some of the locations and how convenient that they are. In addition to the local post office, they are also located in other government offices, libraries and county clerk offices. Many times, the passport office is very close to home, but people are not aware that it even exists because they never thought that they would be planning an international trip.

Because there is the need to get a passport photo, it is important to check to see if the local office is capable of providing this service. This is not part of the fee structure and there will be a separate charge. While many of the passport offices do have this capability, some of the smaller ones do not and the photos will have to be obtained before ever heading over there to turn everything in.

There are times, however, when a person will still have to head to a regional office in order to get their passport. This is generally an exception and will only need to be done when the passport is needed in a shorter time frame than the standard services. Regional offices are located in major cities across the United States are all listed on the State Department website.

The bright side to the passport story is that the only time you need to go there in person is the first time. When the passport has to be renewed, everything can be done via the mail. As long as a passport is not lost, you will never have to go through this time consuming process again. Just download the forms, fill them out and send them in with the required documents.

Everyone that applies for a first time passport needs to visit a U.S. passport office. The best way to find a nearby passport center is perform a zip code search on the Department of State website. Although this seems like a tedious and time-consuming process, it is in the interest of national security, and only needs to be done once provided the passport is never lost. Waiting in line at a passport center is a small price to pay for international travel.
