Dolphin Spotting By Day, Party Time By Night, It Can Only Be Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and is a very lively and busy island. It is located around 200 miles off the west coast of North West Africa. The Southern part of Tenerife is hot, dry and arid and probably receives more visitors, whereas in the north of the island it’s green and verdant, which naturally means there is occasional rainfall.

There are two airports on the island, Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofia) which is the busiest and Tenerife North Airport (TFN) (Aeropuerto de Los Rodeos) which is the smaller of the two.

Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife, a lively city and shipping port located on the northeast coast and the huge harbour holds numerous container ships, cruise liners and inter island jet foils and ferries. Sited in a large natural bay, it has a stunning backdrop of the Anaga Mountains that stand over 1,000 metres tall. Although there are not many sight seeing attractions here, it serves as a good base for visiting the north-east of Tenerife.

The busiest resorts on the island are in the south, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Both of these resorts offer a plethora of activities that include water sports. If Whale or Dolphin spotting is your cup of tea then Tenerife is one of the best places to see more than 25 different species of these fascinating creatures. There are an abundance of water parks to visit and have a great time, especially for children. Accommodation ranging from budget to the more upmarket is plentiful and there are many eateries to be found.

The Parque Nacional de las Cañadas del Teide is a must see. It was declared a National Park in 1954 and includes a gigantic volcanic crater that is 48 km in wide, out of which rises breathtaking Mount Teide. This extinct volcano stands at 12,198 feet high and is the highest mountain in the Canaries and all of Spain with its peak visible from all of the Canary Islands.

Access is either by foot or by cable car that will transport you quite close to the summit. On a clear day, from the peak of Teide there are amazing views of Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
